The São Paulo Court of Justice denied the request of Verônica Silva and Priscila Silva, cousins of Gal Costa, so that the will written by the singer in 1997 would be valid. The information is from G1.

At the time, the artist had not yet adopted her 18-year-old son Gabriel Costa, and had made a request for the inheritance to be used for the creation of the Gal Costa Foundation for the Incentive of Music and Culture, whose management would be the responsibility of her cousins.

In the action, the singer’s relatives claimed that Gal had been coerced in 2019 by Wilma Petrillo to revoke the document. When denying the cousins’ request, the judge of the 12th Family Court in the capital explained that the 1997 will was automatically terminated when the son became part of the family.

“Although one could eventually discuss the occurrence of coercion […]it is a fact that the first will predates the adoption of the son, and, therefore, was broken with the supervening of the descendant”, wrote the magistrate.

Adopted son made agreement to create foundation

Despite the court’s denial of this action, Gabriel Costa had already reached an agreement with his mother’s cousins earlier this month so that the Gal Costa Foundation for the Incentive of Music and Culture would be created.

Gabriel agreed to create the foundation after the completion of the inventory, which will define how Gal’s inheritance will be distributed – it is the subject of dispute between him and Petrillo. According to the agreement, resources for the foundation would come from Gabriel’s inheritance and from possible public or private partnerships that have not yet been discussed.

Dispute over Gal Costa’s inheritance

On the 22nd, Petrillo, widow of Gal Costa, requested an urgent conciliation hearing with Gabriel. The hearing, however, does not yet have a date set.

Petrillo’s lawyer, Vanessa Bispo, informed Estadão that the hearing aims to “bring together mother and son so that they can resolve their differences”.

Petrillo claims that he had a stable union with Gal and is therefore his heir. Gabriel initially acknowledged this condition before a judge, but later backtracked and filed a lawsuit to annul the document, arguing that they did not live as a couple.

“She became my mother’s manager, really. They started living together, but without any type of relationship other than friendship and work”, said the singer’s son in an interview with Fantástico.

Gabriel filed a lawsuit to claim his right to his mother’s inheritance. He contests the fraction intended by Gal’s former manager – and presented by the press as his widow – Wilma Teodoro Petrillo. The process is being carried out in secret at the São Paulo Court of Justice (TJSP).

In August 2023, Wilma was appointed as inventor of the assets left by Gal. At that moment, Gabriel, still a minor, was placed under the temporary custody of the businesswoman.

Before that, in July of the same year, the São Paulo Court summoned Gal Costa’s son, Gabriel Costa Penna, to recognize whether or not there was a stable union between the singer and Wilma Petrillo, after the Public Defender’s Office took a stand against the confirmation of the relationship. Wilma then made a new request for recognition of the union.
