Argentine model Alejandra Rodríguez, 60 years old, won Miss Universe in the province of Buenos Aires and placed herself as a candidate to represent the country in the international edition of Miss Universe.

The matter went viral and ended up on social media, as with all her beauty and friendliness, Alejandra reached an important milestone, as after Miss Universe took an important step in its competitions, the organization announced the end of the contest’s age restrictions and Alejandra is the first Miss aged 60.

Until then, it was necessary to be between 18 and 28 years old to compete for the title. All disputes associated with the franchise valid for 2024 must align with the historical change in more than 70 years of the event, created in 1952. In other words, all women who are over 30, 40, 50 years old or older can also apply in their national tryouts and reach the world stage.

Now, after winning the regional stage, Alejandra has qualified for Miss Argentina, which will take place on May 25th, in Buenos Aires. If she beats the other 27 finalists in the national stage, the model will go to Miss Universe.

“From then on, all adult women in the world will be eligible to compete for Miss Universe”, says the organization’s note published on social media.

The new rule is another important decision by Miss Universe, which seeks to include diversity in the competitions. The main driver of this new rule was the purchase of the contest, about a year ago, by Thai businesswoman Anne Jakrajutatip, who is a transgender woman.

Another big factor in this recipe is another rule change for the contest, which since 2023 has started to accept the entry of married women, divorced women and mothers.

Announcement about the new Miss Universe rules

With the news, the announcement was made by Miss Universe, the American R’Bonney Gabriel in 2022, during New York Fashion Week. She, who at 29 years old is the oldest Miss Universe in history, recalled in an interview with the publication that she raised the issue in her final question on stage, shortly before being crowned.

At the time, when asked what change she would make to the competition rules if she could, R’Bonney was firm in saying that she would increase the age limit.

“A woman’s ability to compete in Miss Universe, or anything in life, should not be defined by her age. Age should just be a number.”

According to Miss Universe, Miss Universe is always looking for ways to be more inclusive and make the pageant platform better.

“There’s a bold group of women in charge here, and you know, a lot of people tend to follow what we do.”

Brazilian cases of Miss Universe disqualified for being married

With strict rules in previous years, in 2002, ex-BBB Joseane Oliveira lost the Miss Brazil title for hiding that she was married. At the time, Joseane was forced to hand over the Miss Brazil crown for omitting her marital status.

In a statement that year, Joseane said that “this contest rule is outdated and should be reviewed”.

“I think this is all very outdated. It’s the same thing as saying that a woman can’t have a child and be beautiful. If she won and meets all the beauty criteria, why not give her the title? Times are different. Does this mean that beautiful women can no longer get married? Do you have to be single? I don’t agree with that,” she opines.

Another Brazilian case was that of the candidate from Sergipe, Ana Luísa Castro, who participated in Miss World Brazil, who was also disqualified for being married. Unlike Ana Luísa, who held the crown for just over 24 hours, Joseane almost completed her reign of one year. The news that she would be married only came to light during her participation in “BBB 3”. At the time, she apologized for the mistake.
