Labor Sadiq Khan was elected mayor of London for the third consecutive time after the partial municipal elections held on Thursday in England, according to the results of all areas that make up the British capital released this Saturday (4).
Khan, the first Muslim to become mayor of the British capital, won 1,088,000 votes, compared with 813,000 votes for Conservative candidate Susana Hall, according to figures released by the media ahead of the official ceremony confirming Labor’s victory. .
Polls on voting intentions already indicated the victory of the progressive candidate as certain.
The Labor politician was elected mayor of the capital for the first time in 2016, following the mandate of conservative Boris Johnson, who became prime minister after leaving city hall.
The result in London was released after the Conservatives suffered a severe blow in the partial municipal elections held on Thursday, which served to determine the opinion of the electorate ahead of the general elections scheduled for the second half of this year in the United Kingdom.
With the results announced in 103 of the 107 cities in dispute, the Labor Party led by Keir Starmer takes control of 48, eight more than in the 2021 elections, while the Conservatives lose ten and are left with six city halls.
The Liberal Democratic Party won two city halls and now controls 12. The rest are distributed among smaller parties.
Fellow Labor member Andy Burnham was re-elected mayor of Greater Manchester, in the north of England. With 420,749 votes, he left behind conservative Laura Evans, with 68,946 votes, and independent Nick Buckley, who received 50,304 supports.
In addition, Labor also won the mayorship of Liverpool, where Steve Rotheram was re-elected, and that of South Yorkshire, in the north of England, with Oliver Coppard.
