Google has started making the update available for ChromeOS 124, the new version of its cloud-based operating system that has gained ground in the basic study notebook market. O update brings new functions and design changes that aim to make the software experience more modern and intuitive.
One of the highlights of the new version is the renewed settings panel, whose user interface now has an appearance similar to that of an Android tablet. Different categories are arranged on the left, such as “Network” and “Wallpaper & Style”. When clicking on one of them, a panel is displayed on the right with the possible settings.
The settings panel has elements inspired by Material You, which is the same visual identity used on Android. Pastel tones, pill-shaped buttons and rounded corners are some of the characteristics of this design language.
When hovering the mouse over the maximize/reduce window button, the operating system already displays different options to organize windows quickly, and now, with ChromeOS 124, just drag a window to one side, and the system will allow the user choose another window to position next to it — a function similar to that of Windows 11.
ChromeOS 124 also now offers a Quality of Service (QoS) feature that, according to Google’s release notes, guarantees “better prioritization of traffic for video conferencing applications and games on congested wireless networks”, which can be especially advantageous for Chromebook gamers.
Another change is support for human interface devices (HID) in Fast Pair, allowing these devices to connect more quickly to the Chromebook. Additionally, small system-level tweaks should improve your overall experience.
