No places for Brazil in the World Relay Championship for now. This Saturday (4), the qualifying heats of the competition held in the Bahamas took place. In addition to places in the final, the series also qualified the two best teams in each event for the Olympic Games. Confirming the projections after the goal, the Brazilian quartets did not get places and are looking to qualify via repechage.

The men’s 4x100m relay was one position short of a place. In a heat with the current world and Olympic champions, the team formed by Rodrigo Nascimento, Renan Gallina, Erik Cardoso and Paulo André Camilo finished in third place with 38s79. Gold in Tokyo-2020, Italy came in second place and the United States, champions of Budapest, confirmed their favoritism and qualified.

Then, it was the turn of Gabriela Mourão, Ana Carolina Azevedo, Lorraine Martins and Vitória Rosa to take to the track to compete in the heat of the women’s 4x100m relay. The Brazilian quartet had problems with the baton passes and took fifth place in the heat, clocking 43s82. France came second and took the last Olympic spot with 43.09. The United States team came first with 42.21.

4x400m

The first quartet to take action on the day was the mixed 4x400m. The team formed by Tiago Lemes, Gabriela Grunow, Douglas Mendes and Tabata Vitorino ended up finishing in last place in the heat. The mark was 3min28s01, around 14 seconds behind the Dominican Republic team, which came second and took the Olympic spot. The Dutch won in 3min12s16.

The women’s 4x400m team was among the last heats of the day. Vcitoria Sena, Letícia Lima, Jainy Suelen and Anny Bassi crossed the line in last position and had no time counted due to disqualification. Among the men, Lucas Carvalho, Matheus Lima, Victor Hugo Miranda and Lucas Vilar had a good start. However, they lost strength on the third pass and finished with 3:03.97.

The recap

Brazilian teams still have one more chance to qualify for the World Relay Championship. Despite being eliminated, the quartets return to the track this Sunday (5) for the repechage dispute. There will be three heats per event, with the best two in each guaranteeing a place in Paris-2024.

Furthermore, even if the teams do not obtain a place in the repechage, there is the possibility of classification via the world rankings. The list will define the last two places in each relay. Teams not yet classified have until June 30th, when the window closes, to improve their marks. The valid period started in January last year.
