The property that until recently housed the oldest bar and restaurant in Belo Horizonte is on the ground. Video taken by neighboring residents shows the moment of demolition of the house that housed Tip Top, opened in 1929, on Rua Rio de Janeiro, in the Lourdes neighborhood, in the Center-South region of the capital.

The new house has been operating since January at Rua Paraíba, 811, in Savassi, where renovations were carried out to accommodate the emblematic establishment. The decision to change the address had been made when the original property was sold, and now the land will be occupied by a residential building.
Tip Top was founded by Czech Paula Huven and is a landmark of Belo Horizonte at the beginning of the century. The name refers to a slang term widely used in Europe in the 1920s and 1930s, which means “alright”, “everything is fine”.
Imported items were sold there, the famous Tip Top soft drink, prepared with carbonated water, loved by young people, and Swiss cheeses that arrived in 120-kilo wheels, as well as exclusives such as cold draft beer, potato salad and sausages, dishes that are served the same way for more than 80 years.
Tip Top has always kept a little of the city’s memory. Those who arrived could see and relive important events in BH. Old photos, previously displayed on the bar’s walls, showed, for example, Curral Del Rey, the era of trams and tree-lined streets, in tune with a charming, pleasant atmosphere and varied menu.
The restaurant now occupies the place where a bakery used to be, in Savassi, and has been modernized with new equipment – the pans remained from the old headquarters. The menu doesn’t change and the employees remain loyal. A small change only in the musical program, no longer made for dancing, following the trend of Belo Horizonte residents who are preferring to leave the house earlier to enjoy the nightfall.
