The latest report from Civil Defense shows that the number of deaths recorded as a result of the rain in Rio Grande do Sul has risen to 56.

In the last flood that hit Rio Grande do Sul, in the Vale do Itaquari and Serra regions, in September last year, 54 people lost their lives due to drowning or landslides. This, therefore, officially becomes the biggest natural tragedy in Rio Grande do Sul.

This Civil Defense report also shows that 74 people are still missing and more than 32 thousand had to go to shelters or to the homes of family and friends. Of the 497 municipalities, 281 were affected. The number of people affected reaches 377,497.

In Porto Alegre, the information is that Lake Guaíba reached 5.4 meters this morning. It is the highest level since 1941, which was the biggest flood in the city’s history, when Guaíba reached 4.76 meters. The alert level for the Historic Center region is 2.5 meters, with 3 meters for flooding.

The prediction of the mayor here in Porto Alegre, Sebastião Melo, is that this level could reach 5.5 meters. The center of Porto Alegre is below water. Access to Porto Alegre via BR-116 is interrupted and Salgado Filho international airport has been closed since last night due to the volume of rain.
