Bassist and vocalist Marko Hietala left Nightwish in 2021, citing preservation of mental health and disbelief with the music industry. Now in 2024, the Finn has already taken his sabbatical and returned to musical activities, but has not returned to his former band.

In an interview with Kerrang, keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen spoke about the new album “Yesterwynde”, the first without Marko since “Wishmaster” and reflected on the writing process without him.
“No, it doesn’t actually change much, except that now we had two voices instead of three, just Floor and Troy. But that’s it – it really hasn’t changed much. And Jukka [Koskinen], the new bassist, has such a focused personality that it is very easy to work with him. And his bass skills are tremendous, quite different from how Marko played the bass, which also brought a new flavor to the music. So I only have positive things to say about all of this.

There are many bands in the world that no longer have any original members. And I think it all comes down to the fact that if the music is good, then that’s all that matters in the end. Maybe for some people, certain bands are so sacred that they can’t stay if they don’t have certain members in them, even if the music is good, but I don’t think so. I just listen to the music, not the people behind it. That’s all that matters to me.”
