13 years after the suspense masterpiece, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino appeared together again in front of the cameras. But this time no one was very happy with the result.

Al Pacino and Robert De Niro are not only two of the greatest actors of their generation and living Hollywood legends, but they have also been close friends for almost 50 years. However, it was a while before the two big names were seen together in front of the camera: although they played both lead roles in Francis Ford Coppola’s six-time Oscar-winning mob landmark The Godfather 2, this was despite the epic production of over 200 minutes. They don’t have a single scene together in the film.

That finally changed in 1995, when they created another masterpiece with director Michael Mann: Fire Against Fire. But here, too, there are few moments when the two Oscar winners can actually be seen together on stage. Their next collaboration came in 2008, and this time you can marvel at how the two acting heavyweights interact with each other in various scenes. But Robert De Niro still regrets this film to this day.

This film was a huge disappointment for Robert De Niro and Al Pacino

We are talking about The Two Faces of the Law, available in the Max catalogue, which was eagerly awaited by film fans – but which ended up leaving the majority of viewers bitterly disappointed. In the work of director Jon Avnet (who previously directed the direct-to-DVD thriller, 88 Minutes with Pacino), De Niro and Pacino play two police officers who are on the trail of a serial killer specialized in the subject.

For QueroCinema users, the film is rated 3.8 out of 5 stars. Most critics don’t share much of this opinion: the film only has 18% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

In an interview with Variety it appears that even De Niro agrees with this assessment. The Raging Bull star recalled the premiere of The Two Faces of the Law in Rome and the associated meeting with his fans as follows: “I said, ‘It’s a big reaction, but it would be nice if they were here for a movie we’re really proud of. Next time we’ll make one we like.’”

By then, another 11 years had passed, but De Niro kept his promise: in the gangster film The Irishman, the two appeared together on camera for the first time in a Martin Scorsese production – and this time both fans were happy with criticism.
