The CRF-MS (Regional Pharmacy Council of Mato Grosso do Sul) is carrying out, this Saturday (04), an action to raise awareness among the population about the rational use of medicines. The act is in reference to the National Day for the Rational Use of Medicines, celebrated on May 5th.
On Avenida Afonso Pena, corner of Rua 14 de Julho, leaflets are being handed out to pedestrians and drivers passing by.
The housewife, Lucia Ferreira, 57 years old, states that she only takes medication under medical advice. “I know I can’t take it alone. I always have to go to the doctor,” she pointed out.
The administrative assistant, Edinilza Sampaio, aged 56, says the same thing. “Antibiotics are very difficult for me to take alone. Every 2 months I need to go to the doctor, as I have had cancer. So, prescription only,” she said.
Data gathered by the CFF (Federal Pharmacy Council) based on research carried out by ICTQ/Datafolha, shows that during the pandemic, retail had a sustained increase in sales of antimicrobials (antibiotics).
In the Midwest, in 2020, 15,748,272.66 antimicrobial medicines were sold. In 2021 there were 16,504,543.65; 2022, 18,962,429; 2023, 18,106,457.38; and 2024, between January and February; 2,634,318.65.
“Our main role is to raise awareness. People have been using antibiotics incorrectly, and this is harmful. The population has the right to information. The use of antibiotics must be monitored”, pointed out the president of the CRF-MS, Daniely Proença.
In Brazil, the number of sales went from 180,791,152 in 2020 to 219,760,565 for 2023. In January and February of this year there were 30,958,127.
The situation represents a serious threat to the prevention and treatment of various infections caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites.
Furthermore, according to the Federal Pharmacy Council, the scenario also becomes more evident when analyzing the growth in sales of azithromycin, an antibiotic that was part of the so-called “covid kit”, along with hydroxychloroquine, ivermectin, dexamethasone and vitamins C and D .
