According to the Ministry of Health, the application of vaccines in adulthood is extremely important.

Vaccination is a great help in controlling and eliminating many diseases caused by viruses or bacteria. However, when we think about vaccines, we immediately associate them with children or Covid-19, which everyone needed to take due to the rapid contagion. However, many preventable diseases remain concerns, especially in adults who have not received recommended doses in the past. This is because there is a lifelong vaccination schedule.

According to the Ministry of Health, the application of vaccines in adulthood is extremely important. Some only need to be renewed, such as measles, rubella, diphtheria and tetanus, while others are doses administered exclusively at a specific age. Look:

Vaccinations from the age of 18

Some vaccines can be administered at any time after age 18. The main ones are:

  • Hepatitis B
  • dT (adult double – against tetanus and diphtheria)
  • yellow fever

The hepatitis B and dT vaccines are administered in three doses of each throughout life. Regarding dT, after this scheme, the reinforcement will be every 10 years or every five years in the case of an accident with serious injury.

The number of doses applied and the interval between them are defined according to the vaccination status. For example, if a person has only received one dose of hepatitis B vaccine in their life, they will receive two more doses; if she received two, she will receive one, and so on. If there is doubt as to whether the person has already been vaccinated or not, the basic scheme is restarted.

Yellow fever has a single dose regimen for those who took it after 5 years of age. If you received it before turning 5 years old, a booster is recommended.

Vaccinations from 20 to 29 years old

For this age group, in addition to those available for any age, the triple viral vaccine is recommended, which protects against measles, mumps and rubella. The application of this immunizer is carried out in two doses. If the person has already taken one, they will need to take the other. If the regimen has not yet been started, you will take the first dose and must return for the second dose.

After taking the first dose, the second should be applied after 30 days.

Vaccines from 30 to 59 years old

In this age group, it is also necessary to take the triple viral vaccine. However, the Ministry of Health recommends that, after the age of 30, the immunizer should only be administered in one dose.

Vaccines aged 60 and over

For this group, the main vaccines to be taken are: hepatitis B, dT (adult double), and yellow fever.

Vaccines against hepatitis B and dT work as follows: if the person has already taken them throughout their life, they do not need to take them after the age of 60. If you have never taken it, from that age onwards you should start or complete the vaccination schedule for these diseases.

For dT, there is a booster every 10 years or every five years, in case of serious injuries.

Regarding yellow fever, if the person has never taken the vaccine, they must undergo a medical evaluation to analyze the need for this vaccine or not.

In addition, the elderly are also a priority for vaccination against flu and Covid-19. In the case of flu, immunization is annual.

HPV

One of the most important vaccines is the one that protects against low-risk HPV (types 6 and 11), which causes anogenital warts, and high-risk HPV (types 16 and 18), which causes cervical, penile, anal and oral.

This vaccine is recommended for adults up to 45 years of age who have a history of sexual abuse, live with HIV, are cancer patients or have undergone transplants. The application consists of three doses and is only carried out with a medical prescription. For people over 45 years of age, the decision about vaccination can be made jointly between the healthcare professional and the patient.
