The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) is holding a national competition for the architectural and landscape design of the Fiocruz Covid-19 Memorial – Science and Health. The competition, organized by the Institute of Architects of Brazil (IAB-RJ), continues to the proposal judging phase , which will be held from May 6th to 20th.

The contest registered 93 registrations approved and 88 proposals received of projects from multidisciplinary teams across the country. The winners of the competition will be announced on May 21st, with the result ratified on May 23rd, 2024. Authors of the three best classified proposals will be awarded, with the team ranked first being hired to develop the projects.

With the purpose of dedicating a symbolic space, the Memorial Covid-19 Fiocruz – Science and Health constitutes a stimulating environment for reflections on the meaning of this historical moment experienced not only in Brazil, but in the world.

The future memory space will be implemented at Fiocruz’s headquarters campus in the Manguinhos neighborhood, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, in an area measuring 2,503.31 square meters, adjacent to the Avenida Brasil entrance complex.

The person coordinating the competition is the architect and urban planner Cláudio Crispim. The judging panel for the next phase of the competition is made up of architects and urban planners Eduardo Barra, Ernani Freire, Gloria Cabral, Luis Madeira and Regina Pontin, as well as historian Cristina Meneguello and doctor Valdiléa Veloso, who will analyze the work based on technical, landscape and preservation guidelines for historical and cultural heritage.
