North American artist was 87 years old

Painter Frank Stella, a key figure in post-war American art, particularly with the first minimalist works he produced, died at the age of 87, US media reported on Saturday.

Frank Stella died at home in New York, a victim of lymphoma, wrote The New York Times.

Born on May 12, 1936, in Malden, Massachusetts, Stella was recognized before he was 25 years old.

He began his career with paintings that contrasted with the abstract expressionism of the time, using few colors. His early works included large works with precise black stripes on a blank canvas, which took the art world in the US and beyond by storm.

Later, he explored color and shape, occasionally creating paintings of irregular shapes with geometric patterns.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Stella turned more to three-dimensional works, incorporating aluminum and fiberglass into her work, before executing monumental sculptures.

The Museum of Modern Art in New York dedicated two retrospectives to him, in 1970 and 1987.
