Monuments can gain parts with no commercial value to prevent theft

-

Frequent targets of thefts due to the value on the illegal marketthe parts of monuments and sculptures in Campinas can be replaced with materials with no commercial value. The proposal was sent by the Culture and Tourism department to the city’s Condepacc (Cultural Heritage Defense Council).

“The idea is to evaluate whether busts and bronze pieces can be replaced with alternative material to prevent theft and acts of vandalism at monuments”, says the Administration statement. With this, the parts would be produced by a company, which would guarantee that visual aspects would be maintained.

The objective is to create a solution for the bronze replacement, targeted by thieves due to the high value. The exchanges, however, would depend on studies. “It is not yet possible to say what would be done with the pieces and sculptures that are currently on display in public areas; or even which ones would be replaced”it says.

Campinas has 115 listed monuments as heritage by Condepacc.
