-

CCBB BH receives the exhibition “Noises”, which covers a section of the Brazilian visual artist’s production Berna Realefrom 2009 to 2023, in photography, object, performance, painting and video. The works propose a reflection on the human condition in the face of gender, economic and social inequality, as well as violence.

On the way through the exhibition spaces, seductive images created by the artist which, according to the curator, Silas Marti, they are strategies for reporting “the most varied types of violence against the most vulnerable groups, such as women, residents of the outskirts and prison populations”. It’s a narrative of what is live in Brazil, a baroque, tropical and violent countryand what it means to be Brazilian.”

A reality also presents itself in sculptural objects made with aluminum cake molds. The artist emphasizes that the graphic interaction of the design engraved on the metal is not just a material taken from its context. It is also in the cakes that relatives and wives of inmates try to send weapons, drugs, cell phones and other objects into prisons clandestinely and end up being detained as well. “The work ‘Arma Branca’, for example, says a lot about the domestic violence. Notice how much symbolism there is in a cake with engraved knives”, comments the artist.

“Exhaust”. “It is part of a project developed over the course of a year. It presents the same character in other contexts, including walking through the streets of New York. This video is perhaps the moment that most represents the project, as the discomfort of not being in the midst of anguish, loneliness and the impossibility of surviving, of choosing to give up, becomes clearer”, explains Berna.
