Sculpture in honor of fishermen is vandalized before it is even inaugurated in Serra

Even before its inauguration, a sculpture in honor of local fishermen, located in Praça dos Pescadores in Nova Almeida, Serra, was the target of vandalism. The work, created to celebrate the rich history of riverine fishing, which sustained the region’s economy for decades, had significantly damaged parts.

The sculpture is being developed by the renowned artist from Espírito Santo, Tião Fonseca, who chose to represent a canoe — a central element in the lives of fishermen. Unfortunately, the canoe has already suffered significant damage from individuals who were captured on security cameras while climbing and jumping over the canoe.

According to article 163 of the Brazilian Penal Code, acts of destruction, destruction or deterioration of public property are considered crimes against property. In response to the situation, measures were taken to protect the work: it was covered with a tarpaulin and marked, in addition to the installation of additional video surveillance cameras to prevent future incidents.

The other pieces that will make up the sculptural set are being completed in the artist’s studio. After the inauguration, scheduled to take place until May 15th, according to Fernanda Vieira, cultural activist, artist and project manager, the sculpture will be accompanied by a plaque with a QR Code. This code will allow visitors to access information about the creative process of the work and the history of the Nova Almeida community.
