The Bronx Zoo, located in New York, in the United States, has a curious tradition for Valentine’s Day (St. Valentine’s Day, also known as Valentine’s Day in the United States, Mexico and other countries around the world): the possibility of naming a giant cockroach from Madagascar after your loved one — or your ex, if you are a vindictive person.

The “Name-a-Roach” program reached its 13th edition this year and, for US$15 (approximately R$75), allows tourists to symbolically give a name to one of the cockroaches in the exhibition “Madagascar!”, shown at the zoo. (learn more below)

The simplest package offered by the establishment, worth US$15, entitles you to a digital certificate, sent to the recipient on the morning of Valentine’s Day itself, on February 14th. For US$35 (around R$173), in addition to the certificate, the buyer will also be able to have a virtual encounter with one of the zoo’s Madagascar cockroaches.

See all packages offered:

  • The Original, for US$15 (R$74.21): digital certificate;

Orders can be made by people from all over the world and must be registered by February 8, so that the gift can be received by Valentine’s Day. Virtual meetings last approximately 15 minutes and can be scheduled.

Money raised from the program helps animal conservation work promoted by the Wildlife Conservation Society, which manages the world’s largest network of urban wildlife parks.

The species honored by the Bronx Zoo is the Madagascar cockroach, considered the largest species of cockroach in the worldIt measures 5 cm to 7.5 cm and weighs up to 23 grams.

These insects are also known as hissing cockroaches or Madagascar hissing cockroaches because They make a noise similar to a snake’s rattle as they expel air through their spiracles (breathing holes).

They live for two to five years in nature and, according to information from Planeta Inseto, an exhibition at the Biological Institute museum (IB-APTA), belonging to the Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply of the State of São Paulo, a small colony of this species can feed on a large carrot in just one day.
