Another case of a crew member disappearing in foreign territory has caught the attention of the Pakistani aviation industry. Faiza Mukhtar, a flight attendant for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), is the latest crew member to disappear on Canadian soil during a stopover in Toronto.

She was supposed to work the return flight from Toronto to Karachi two days later, but didn’t show up. This scenario has become common in recent years, with multiple stories reported in the media. PIA flight attendants leave Pakistan, their home country, and do not return. This results in flight cancellations due to lack of crew.

At least eight flight attendants have disappeared during stops in Canada over the past two years. To mitigate the problem, the airline has adopted some strategies:

– Only crew members over 50 years old are scheduled for flights to Canada. The hypothesis is that older women, alone, are less likely to try to start a new life in another country.

– Team monitoring during shifts has been expanded.

PIA airline is known for peculiar episodes such as the sacrifice of a goat for security and flights with more passengers than available seats. Although the Pakistani market is large and attractive for partnerships between airlines – having been the trigger for the partnership between United Airlines and Emirates, and for the partnership between American Airlines and Qatar Airways – PIA faces considerable challenges.

Financial difficulties, aircraft retention and questionable political management fill the scenario with uncertainty regarding the possibility of the company becoming profitable.

Pakistan, an Islamic Republic, has a bitter economy inferior to that of countries such as Haiti, Uzbekistan and the Republic of Congo. In this context, the departure of people from the country, with the help of the PIA, can be seen both as a problem and as a valuable act.
