247 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, responded in writing to one of his predecessors, Celso Lafer, who had released a letter criticizing Brazil’s decision to support South Africa’s action at the International Court of Justice in which it accuses Israel of commit genocide against the Palestinian people.
“I maintain my opinion that genocide does not apply to the discussion of humanitarian issues and the law of war,” said Lafer, taking a favorable position against the Israeli government, condemned by the vast majority of the international community for committing genocide against the Palestinian people.
Celso Lafer, who was chancellor during the government of Fernando Henrique Cardoso, argued in his message to current chancellor Mauro Vieira that it is not possible to invoke the Convention for the Prevention of Genocide in Israeli attacks on Palestinians in Gaza.
According to the column Panel da Fiolha de S.Paulo, Chancellor Mauro Vieira sent a message to Lafer reaffirming the Lula government’s position, arguing that the crime of genocide “would be ongoing in the attacks on Gaza”.
CONTINUES AFTER RECOMMENDATIONS
The International Court of Justice accepted the action brought by the South African government against Israel and ordered the Zionist state to take the necessary measures to protect the Palestinian civilian population. The international court also demands that Israel present a report reporting the measures within a month. The investigation into the crime of genocide continues.
