British Chancellor David Cameron says recognition of a Palestinian state is conditional on Hamas leaving the region
The UK can recognize a Palestinian state after a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, without waiting for international discussions without the issue. The information was given on Thursday (Feb 1, 2024) by British Chancellor David Cameron.
According to him, the acceptance of the 2-State solution by the United Kingdom depends on the definitive exit of Hamas from the region. “What we need to do is to give the Palestinian people a horizon for a better future, the future of having their own state”, said Cameron in Lebanon, quoted by the newspaper The Guardian.
The United Kingdom, like the United States and other Western countries, supports the idea of an independent Palestine, coexisting with Israel. But, according to the nations, Palestinian independence must occur as part of a negotiated agreement.
Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel, said on January 18 that he had communicated to the US that opposes the creation of a Palestinian state in a post-war scenario. The Israeli leader added that the plan goes against the idea of his country’s sovereignty.
According to Cameron, the prospect of a Palestinian state is “absolutely vital to the long-term peace and security of the region”.
