A 55-year-old Uruguayan doctor died of cardiac arrest when he was very close to touching the Argentine coast and fulfilling his dream of swimming across the River Plate, authorities and relatives said this Friday (2).

Gonzalo Leal, a renowned surgeon residing in the city of Salto, in northwestern Uruguay, died this Thursday afternoon “one kilometer away from completing his journey”, said Uruguayan Navy spokesman Captain Alejandro Pérez.

“There is always a boat that follows these types of activities. He was placed on the boat and it was not possible to revive him due to the cardiac arrest he suffered,” he told journalists, clarifying that the case is under Argentine jurisdiction.

An experienced swimmer, Leal left around 4:30 am on Thursday, the 1st, from the Uruguayan city of Colonia del Sacramento, with the aim of swimming the 40 kilometers to the Argentine city of Punta Lara, in the province of Buenos Aires.

He intended to cross “the widest river in the world”, said Open Waters Argentina (OWA), a circuit for open water swimming lovers, which organized the event.

“The 55-year-old Uruguayan, trained by Spaniard Sergi García, represents the Jumping Rowers Club,” said the OWA. “Throughout last year he divided his time in the operating room (as a vascular surgeon) and in the pool, preparing for this challenge,” he added.

The doctor, father of four children and candidate for mayor of Salto for the Orange Movement of the Colorado Party (center-right) in 2020, had announced a few days ago on his Instagram account that he would start the journey between the 1st and 10th of February, when it was enabled by the authorities.

“As the OWA logo says elaguanosune ”, he said then, highlighting his passion for swimming since he was a child. The River Plate, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean, has a maximum width of around 220 km.
