Leal had left Colônia do Sacramento, swimming, at 4:30 am yesterday (1st), and was closely followed by two boats, one for first aid and the other in which his son accompanied him. He was heading to the coast of Punta Lara, where he was awaited by employees of the Argentine Naval Prefecture and family members.
The doctor, who was a vascular surgeon, was able to swim the 40 kilometer crossing, after presenting medical tests required by the organizers to carry out the race. The tests indicated that he had no health problems.
Around 1,500 meters before the end of the crossing, in Argentina, the swimmer began to make erratic movements and the teams quickly arranged for him to be removed from the water. His lips were purple and he had no vital signs, but he was taken to a local hospital which confirmed his death.
