A restriction had been initiated in September 2023, by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunakone day after a man was killed by a dog of the breed.
Around the same time, an 11-year-old girl was seriously injured by an XL Bully while walking in the English city of Birmingham. Two men who helped with the rescue were also bitten.
After the restriction was announced, around 30,000 dogs of the breed were registered so that their owners could receive a certificate of permanence for the animal.
The document requires that pets of the breed be sterilized to prevent their reproduction and wear a muzzle in public. The goal is to extinct the breed in the long term.
“It is clear this is not a handful of poorly trained dogs, it is a pattern of behavior and it cannot continue,” said UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
In the UK, it is illegal to own, breed or sell dogs that are on the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) banned list. Currently, the prohibited breeds are pit bull terrier, Brazilian fila, tosa inu and dogo argentino.
