Trump passes Biden in 2024 US election polls

Exactly one year before the presidential elections in the United States, voting intention surveys revealed in recent days that the performance of the current president, Joe Biden, until then considered the favorite, is well below expectations. And they placed the ex-president donald trumpRepublican, ahead of Democratic rival.

A survey carried out by the newspaper “The New York Times” in six states considered key for the elections and released over the weekend showed that the former president Donald Trump, Republican pre-candidate, would win in five of them, if the elections took place this month (read more below).

But a round of elections held on Tuesday (7) in three North American states consecrated the victory of the progressive agendas defended by the Democrats and gave a new breath of hope to Biden’s party.

To the voting took place in four states, and, in them, voters had to vote on specific issues – for governor, to renew the Chamber, to choose a new local Supreme Court judge and to decide whether abortion should be legalized:

  • In Ohio, there was a vote to decide on the abortion rights and to legalize recreational marijuana; the majority voted in favor in both cases.
  • In Kentucky, voters went to the polls to elect the governor – the Democrat Andy Beshearwho currently holds the position, managed to get re-elected with a campaign focused on progressive agendas.
  • In Pennsylvania, the election was for a seat in Supreme Court local. Other democratDan McCaffery, who also defended the right to abortion on the campaign trail, won the position.
  • And the state of Virginia made a request to renew the Legislature. In the vote, the Democrats took full control of the Housepreviously in the hands of the Republicans.

The fact that, In Ohio and Kentucky, Trump emerged victorious in 2020. And in both, the abortion was the central theme of the campaign for Tuesday’s elections.

Since then, it has been up to each state to decide whether to maintain or overturn this right.

Tuesday’s elections, held a year before the White House vote, They often serve as a thermometer and give a portrait of American politics towards 2024.

Biden, according to the survey, only leads in Wisconsin. In 2020, when he was elected, he defeated Donald Trump in all six states.

From Sunday’s poll, however, Trump leads with an average of 48% of voting intentionscompared to 44% for Biden.

It is in these key states that presidential elections are normally decided in the United States.

In 2020, Biden’s victories in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin – all places won by Trump in 2016 – were decisive for him to be elected in 2020.

“But predictions more than a year in advance tend to be different a year later. Gallup predicted an 8 percentage point defeat for President Obama, and he won handily a year later,” Biden campaign spokesman Kevin Munoz said in a statement.
