The rescue of a 48-year-old man mobilized firefighters and Spanish police teams last Wednesday (24). The victim, who weighs more than 250 kg, was trapped among tons of rubbish in the basement of a building in the town of El Prat de Llobregat, in Barcelona. With the help of a backhoe machine, the garbage was removed and the victim was treated.
According to journalist Anna Punsí, the man has Diogenes syndrome (DS), also known as hoarding disorder. “In 2003, the Local Police informed Public Health and in 2012, 13 and 14 made home visits alerted by neighbors. They closed the case in 2015,” explained the journalist on social media.
Neighbors informed the authorities that he lived in the apartment with his mother, who is already deceased and previously worked at an airport. Authorities believe that the man has not left home since 2020, even during the pandemic. “He will spend a lot of time at Bellvitge Hospital. His apartment is now boarded up. he’s going to need help,” warned Punsí.
