Officials from the United States Transportation Security Agency (TSA) identified an animal presence inside a piece of luggage at JFK Airport in New York. During an x-ray inspection last Wednesday (16), agents identified objects such as bottles and shoes, but also noticed that a cat was being transported inside a suitcase.

According to the American newspaper The Washington Post, the case was registered on a flight to the city of Orlando, Florida, known mainly for its amusement parks, such as Disney and Universal.

When called to explain the feline presence in the luggage, the passenger claimed that the animal “wasn’t his, but someone else at the inn,” said Lisa Farbstein, a spokeswoman for the TSA. The suspect is that the cat got into the suitcase without being noticed by the man.

The TSA representative told The Washington Post that the traveler missed his flight, but managed to reschedule it for the next day, but this time, “without the cat”, added Lisa.

In a Twitter post, the agency shared records of the seizure. It is possible to observe an unusual format in the x-ray, which ended up being confirmed as a feline when the security guards unzipped the luggage: it is possible to see yellowish hairs coming out through a small crack.

The last photo shows an agent cautiously opening the suitcase. According to the newspaper, luckily, the animal did not try to escape when the officers carried out the seizure – which can also be considered a rescue, since the animal would be subject to dangerous conditions when traveling in the hold of an aircraft.

The American newspaper New York Post was able to locate the owner of the cat, called “Smells”. Alix, 37, said she was at work and hadn’t noticed the animal until she received a call from authorities. The TSA questioned whether she “wanted to press charges” against the passenger, as well as asking whether there was reason for him to “try to steal the cat and go to Florida.”

Then Alix’s fiance went to the airport and picked up the animal, which returned home safely. “I was worried that Smells was scared, but he didn’t even meow on the way back,” he told the New York Post. “I gave him some extra snacks and he acted like nothing happened.”

Other records of unusual seizures have already been released by the TSA. Earlier this month, for example, agents interrupted an attempt to smuggle a firearm hidden inside a raw chicken. The case was registered at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, in the state of Florida.
