Todas as Flores, which ends on Globo this Monday (20), exposed the vices and virtues of author João Emanuel Carneiro. All the qualities common to the novelist’s work, as well as the defects, were present in the journey of Maíra (Sophie Charlotte), Vanessa (Letícia Colin) and Zoé (Regina Casé), which, despite the setbacks, had a positive outcome.
It is not difficult to notice a series of similarities between the most recent work and other titles in the author’s career. His most praised creations are A Favorita (2008) and Avenida Brasil (2012), but he also made the hits Da Cor do Pecado (2004) and Cobras & Lagartos (2006), in addition to the less famous A Regra do Jogo (2015) and Segundo Sol (2018).

They were in Todas as Flores: charismatic and histrionic villains capable of guaranteeing the soap opera’s popularity on social media; stories of injustice and revenge that invariably hook the public; and successive twists and turns in order to impose a breakneck pace to the narrative, maintaining the viewer’s interest for chapters on end.
Other not-so-laudable brands from the João Emanuel Carneiro brand were also present: supporting characters without the same content as the main plot – with the exception of Mauritânia (Thalita Carauta); and implausible and illogical situations, especially action ones, in which the author, as well as director Carlos Araujo, seemed to doubt the intelligence of those watching.

Todos as Flores gave important signals to Globo and João Emanuel Carneiro
When Todas as Flores was made available by Globoplay, in two parts, there was acclaim for the first phase, shown in 2022, while the continuation, in the first half of 2023, received a barrage of criticism. Maíra’s much-vaunted revenge was disappointing, and the uninspired direction of the story also frustrated the audience.
For better or worse, the plot had considerable repercussion and signaled that the scheme of producing exclusive soap operas for streaming was fruitful and profitable. If the attraction was disappointing at times, it was much more due to the limitations of the text, which seemed not very polished, than due to the investment in the new platform.

The successes seem to have overcome the mistakes, and Todas as Flores quickly gained airing on open TV, which ends this week with good ratings. Carneiro also won a ticket back to prime time and will sign the replacement for Renascer in the second half of 2024 – the plot has the provisional title Mania de Você.

The fact is that Todas as Flores had the capacity to be much better than it was. The interesting story, with a well-cast cast, had a lot to offer, but it fell short on the points mentioned above. It was enough for the author to look at his own work, since, in practically all the mistakes he made, he was a repeat offender.
