Rejected at Globo, Regina Duarte wants to make a biblical soap opera at Record
Outside of Rede Globo since 2020, when she terminated her contract to take over the Special Secretariat for Culture in the Bolsonaro government, Regina Duarte reveals her desire to return to TV. In an interview with the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, the former girlfriend from Brazil says that she would be willing to do a biblical soap opera on Record in the future.
“I would really like to do an evangelical soap opera on Record, I like those stories, I’m fascinated by it, and I feel like it’s not just me. A lot of people like it”, she confessed. His last work on the small screen was the serial ‘Tempo de Amar’ (2017), on Globo.
Asked if she believes that the Rio broadcaster would have its doors closed if it rehearsed a return to soap operas, Regina Duarte says that Globo gave in to activism and, therefore, lost unanimity among viewers.
“TV Globo resonates with a part of society that is ‘gritalhona’, that exposes itself, that is always on social media, in dances, in music. It’s a new generation that is there and TV Globo replicates it. And it has its own audience. A lot of people from my time, from my generation, complain and don’t watch anymore. It’s the price you pay for not being able to please everyone, as Globo once pleased, it had 100% audience”.
Ignored by most artists and the target of criticism from many former TV colleagues, the actress says she has no resentment. “If the class doesn’t want to stay with me, that’s their problem, they have every right. I’m not alone, I’m very well accompanied by people who have the same values as me, family, religion, things that give structure, that give root to the tree who we are.”
Regina also complained about the attacks for remaining faithful to the former president. “Many times, I was defenestrated by some people because they don’t like Bolsonaro. And I can’t like it? Do they want to stop me from being a Bolsonaro supporter? Is that the idea? Isn’t it a bit dictatorial? That’s the question that remains in the air “.
Regina Duarte left the Secretary of Culture in May 2020, just over two months after assuming the role. At the time, she was transferred to command the Cinemateca Brasileira, in São Paulo. Asked if she considers that she paid a high price by leaving behind a successful career to live an adventure in Brasília, she replied:
“I didn’t feel betrayed at all, nothing abandoned. It’s just that things there in Brasília are very complicated. It became tumultuous in a way that the blood went to my head because I felt extremely betrayed. That was betrayal for me.”
The veteran also opened up about keeping in touch with Bolsonaro. “I don’t have any closeness with him anymore. At the time, our closeness was very rare, but every time he met me, he would look at me and say ‘Girl, what are you still doing here?’, ‘That’s it. This isn’t for you.’ I laughed and said, ‘President, didn’t you call me here?’, ‘I’m a patriot, president, I’m trying to fulfill my mission.’ , go there with your grandchildren’.
