Pataxó indigenous people denounce that an attack by gunmen ended with at least one person dead in the territory of Barra Velha, in Porto Seguro, in the extreme south of Bahia, in the early hours of this Sunday (4/9). The indigenous people have been denouncing since the end of June that they are surrounded by farmers and unable to leave their communities. The region is the scene of constant conflicts.

According to reports, gunmen arrived by car shooting at indigenous people in Comexatiba. A 14-year-old was reportedly shot and killed. The Kijtxawê Zabelê Indigenous State College, where Gustavo Silva da Conceição studied, expressed a note of sorrow for his death. “In this moment of deep pain, we express our condolences to the family and to the entire Pataxó people,” he said.

According to Diary of the Workers’ Cause, another person would have been injured. “The Indians had just retaken their area and were persecuted and murdered by the large estates. Another is in the hospital seriously injured and one is missing,” said Renato Farac, who is monitoring the situation. In a video sent to Mailyou can hear the shots.

O Mail contacted the United Movement of Indigenous Peoples and Organizations of Bahia (Mupoiba) who said they are monitoring the situation. The Military Police of Bahia and the National Indian Foundation (Funai) were also contacted, but did not respond until the most recent update of this report.

Barra Velha

The Barra Velha Indigenous Territory covers an area of 9,000 hectares and is home to a population of 2,900 indigenous people, according to the Instituto Socioambiental (ISA). The territory is in the region known as the first place where indigenous peoples had contact with white men, when the Portuguese arrived in Brazil. That’s where Monte Pascoal is located.

In July, a mission from the Federal Public Defender’s Office – Regional for Human Rights, together with the Federal Public Ministry, visited the territory to listen to the complaints. At the same time, the Indigenous Federation of the Pataxó and Tupinambá Nations of the Extreme South of Bahia (FINPAT) requested, through a letter, that the authorities provide security for the indigenous people.
