The Ministry of Agriculture banned a snack factory suspected of contamination and ordered the recall of all products from that company, Bassar. According to police, at least 12 dogs died after eating the treats.

The factory is located in Guarulhos, in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, but the investigation began in Minas Gerais.. Owners of two dogs became suspicious after they died in a similar way. The body of one of them was sent for analysis at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). The preliminary report showed ethylene glycol poisoning. To the police, the owners of the animals said that they ate the snack manufactured by the company.

After these cases, other people sought out the Civil Police, reporting deaths and hospitalizations of dogs with kidney problems. Three brands of snacks from that company were collected and the result of the analysis of one of the products confirmed the presence of ethylene glycol.

“Ethylene glycol is a classically toxic compound. It causes kidney damage, leading to insufficiency, which is basically the symptoms that are being observed in animals affected by this intoxication. We still don’t know how the production process of this nature works. So , the investigation needs to go a little further,” said expert Renata Fontes Prado.

Seven deaths are investigated in Minas Gerais. In Sao Pauloat least 18 dogs were poisoned with three products manufactured by the company, five of whom died and another five remain hospitalized.

Suspected cases of dog deaths and hospitalizations have also been reported in other states: alagoas, Goiás, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Sergipe and also in Federal District.

In view of what is happening, the orientation is for dog owners to look for the police in suspected cases of contamination.

“In addition to the immediate care in relation to the animals, you should immediately go to the local police station with the product in hand to be examined and, in case of death, send the animal’s body to be necropsied”, said the delegate of Consumer Protection Danubia Pictures.

The Ministry of Agriculture ordered all batches of products under investigation to be recalled. Bassar Pet Food said it hired a company to inspect the factory machinery production process. And that is already collecting products from points of sale across the country.

Petz, which sells one of the snacks produced by Bassar as its own brand, said it had withdrawn the product preventively from stores.
