SAO PAULO (Reuters) – The dollar accelerated its gains and reached 5.2581 reais this Thursday, a level that had not been seen for almost four weeks, following the international rally of the US currency that led it to renew highs in two decades against a basket of strong rivals.

At 15:15 (GMT), the spot dollar advanced 0.80%, at 5.2423 reais on sale, after jumping 1.10% at the highest point of the day.

On B3, at 15:15 (GMT), the first-maturity dollar futures contract rose 1.06% to 5.2800 reais.

Abroad, a dollar index against six currencies of rich countries rose 0.64% to 109.56, after earlier renewing its highest level in 20 years.

The US currency was boosted by data showing a new expansion of US manufacturing in August, a sign of economic resilience that tends to reinforce the arguments in favor of maintaining an aggressive stance by the country’s central bank in the fight against inflation.

The Federal Reserve – which has already raised interest rates by 2.25 percentage points since March this year – is expected to raise borrowing costs again by 0.75 points at a meeting this month, according to market expectations.
