The global experience of the pandemic brought many challenges to face and the need to close schools meant that countless children and young people lived, for almost two years, in partial schooling.
Social isolation, we knew, would have an unavoidable impact on childhood and adolescence experiences. The confinement, the loss of public and social space that the school represents, added to the excess of screens and the overload also experienced by many caregivers, mothers and fathers, were factors that mobilized different experiences in this period.
At village schoolwe had already been thinking about the need to have more concrete answers to the needs of an integral formation, with amplified experiences in the school environment, understanding the socializing role of this environment in the broad and diversified formation of children and young people in the construction of a conscious and committed citizenship with the very common.
With the pandemic, we found ourselves even more responsible, as a school institution, to face these needs and, a new organization of time at school took place with the expansion of the school day for children and young people.
Why spend more time together at school?
Spending more time together turns out to be the consequence of schooling that seeks to balance in-depth academic study with creativity, contemporary issues on which children and young people need to think about their world, social experiences, the cultivation of friendships, in addition to to enable spontaneous and curious explorations in a wide range of situations.
When aiming at the integrality of the experiences in the Vila and extending the time of the school day, we prioritize some aspects, among which:
- The curricular expansion of multiple experiences, collective connection and group studies, with more time for investigation by problems, art, music, the body in motion, English, in projects integrated with the practice of study groups and the learning self-study as part of routine
- More social times for experiences of playing and playing among equals, conviviality and collegiality.
Considering that the educational purpose of the school is the integral training and the development of different competences, capacities and abilities, in various dimensions of life – intellectual, affective, physical, social and interpersonal – Escola da Vila in extended time gives more effective answers for this educational purpose, as it allows a longer time for training investment and the use of a wider variety of methodological modalities involved in teaching and learning processes.
More time to socialize, more time to study, more time to play…more time to live school!
