Owner of the car that ran over the elderly man showed up this morning (1st), but forensics identified another person
The Civil Police have two suspects in the death of the elderly man, Barnabé de Moraes, 77, who died after being hit by a Volkswagen Gol on Saturday in Jardim Centro-Oeste, Campo Grande.
According to delegate Rauali Kind, the expertise identified a person, but this morning (1st), a 36-year-old man presented himself at the 5th Civil Police Precinct, assuming the crime. “He came here accompanied by a lawyer and took the blame, said he didn’t stop to help because he was afraid,” explained Rauali.
Also according to the delegate, the man said he went home after the crime, took his wife and stayed hidden at a relative’s house, for fear of being arrested. Therefore, when a team from the GOI (Group Operation and Investigation) located the vehicle, they found no one at home. The man could not explain the circumstances of the accident.
Due to the expertise pointing to another person as a suspect, the case is still under investigation. The police still have six witnesses to be heard and are awaiting the examinations that were carried out on Barnabé’s body to identify the cause of death.
A video shows the elderly man walking along the road, with a bag of fish in his hands. He stops, looks to the side to see if a car is coming and tries to cross the street, but when he is approaching the curb, he ends up being run over by the car. The victim was thrown over the windshield and fell to the street. He died on the spot.
