Marvel Had to Pay High Price for X-Men Theme Song

The animated series X-Men is in the catalog of Disney+and the Marvel will release the sequel entitled X-Men ’97 next year. and it seems that the disney had to negotiate a high price to use the opening theme from the 1990s series in the new animation.

According to the ComicBook website, the consultant Eric Lewald commented on negotiations on the opening theme at a Pennsylvania Steel City convention.

“[A música tema de X-Men: A Série Animada] it wasn’t necessarily a deal done when they were producing the new series. Rights were everywhere. I think a secondary person had the rights to the song, so it was a negotiation for them. Obviously, you can’t do the new series without that song. But the guy who sold it knew the same thing, so I’m sure it was a high price.”

The opening above opened all 76 episodes of the animated series’ five seasons. A snippet of the song also appeared as part of Danny Elfman’s soundtrack for the film. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The song was also played in the series finale. Ms. Marvelwhen it is revealed to Kamala Khan that there is some sort of mutation in her genes.

Problems with the theme

X-Men (Play)

In a panel of San Diego Comic-Con which took place in July of this year, the screenwriter and executive producer of X-Men ’97, Beau DeMayoconfirmed that the new series will bring a bit of modernity to the classic theme.

The Newton brothers, known for The Curse of Hill House and The Walking Dead: A New Universeare composing the score inspired by the original instrumental theme by Ron Wasserman.

It remains to be seen whether the original X-Men animated series theme belonged to Wasserman, Haim Saban or Shuki Levyco-founder of Saban Entertainment, who composed and produced power Rangers and Digimon.

A lawsuit was filed in 2019 on behalf of the late composer’s estate. Gyorgy Vukanclaiming that the X-Men’s theme is “substantially similar” to Vukan’s theme for the Hungarian TV series Beautifulfrom the 80s.

The lawsuit filed against Marvel, Disney’s Buena Vista Television, Amazon, Apple, Saban and more said that “the X-Men soundtrack is widely considered the most iconic soundtrack of any animated series in the ’90s”.

Wasserman said in 2016 in an interview with Inverse: “[Na] Saban, everyone was ‘work for contractors’ where they are taking most of their rights.”

The composer added: “[A Saban] kept the reins tight, like in the old studio days, people signed exclusive contracts and kept the lot.”

X-Men ’97 will arrive on Disney+ between September and November 2023.
