Galvão Bueno spoke about the feeling of having narrated Ayrton Senna’s (1960-1994) last race, which took place at the San Marino Grand Prix and ended with the driver’s death. After witnessing the accident, the professional left the transmission booth in shock. “It was my younger brother,” he said.
During Caldeirão with Mion, the narrator recalled some moments from his career and got emotional when mentioning the day Xuxa Meneghel’s ex left. “Can you imagine narrating Senna’s crash?” he reflected.
There you were, and you were transmitting that, I get emotional anywhere. Was my friend. You know those friends who, when you count, fit on your fingers? He was a younger brother. I left the cabin three times. He was breathing, drinking water, we lost the guy.
“He became my friend when he won a Formula 2 or 3 race, he came to introduce himself to me and said that I was going to narrate many of his victories. And so it began”, added Bueno.
Promise to the pilot’s mother
In 2022, during a podcast, Galvão Bueno mentioned a promise made to Neide Senna, Ayrton’s mother. At the time, he stated that her son would not return to Brazil in the luggage compartment of an airplane. He managed at the time to bring the body of the Formula 1 driver into the first class.
“Dona Neide had told me: ‘I don’t want my son to come back like luggage’. And I promised her that wouldn’t happen. We left Bologna for Paris on an Italian Air Force plane, and the commander said: ‘Our war heroes come back like this’. So there was no way.”
When we arrived at Guarulhos airport, Brazilian Air Force fighters escorted us. And, when we went down, something never seen before: the Fire Department vehicle and the people on the streets. It was an emotion and a commotion. All of Brazil there.
“I even said that I wasn’t going to stop narrating Formula 1. And, at that moment, I wasn’t at all sure”, he added, his voice breaking.
