Family members of baby who died after allegedly refusing hospital care demonstrate in Bahia

A group of family and friends of baby Brayan Bastos, who died just over a week ago after suffering a seizure, held a protest this Saturday morning (3), at the door of the Children’s State Hospital (HEC), in Feira de Santana , about 100 km from Salvador.

The group is demanding answers to the case, which is investigated by the Bahia Health Department (Sesab) through an investigation opened in an Emergency Care Unit (UPA) and in the hospital itself.

According to Natália Bastos, Brayan’s mother, the boy was taken to the Children’s Hospital last Wednesday (24) after developing a fever. You Protesters question this guidance supposedly given by the hospital, claiming that there are patients with serious conditions, including children, who do not have a high fever. The professionals would have advised the woman to take the boy to a UPA. [Veja detalhes abaixo] The boy’s family informed that they will sue Sesab in court.

Family accuses hospital of negligence in child’s death in Bahia

According to Brayan’s mother, the boy was taken to the hospital, however, he was not attended to, because his temperature was 38.4 degrees, below that required by the unit’s protocol, which is 39 degrees onwards.

“We arrived at HEC, they took the oximeter and measured his temperature. It was 38.4 and the girl who was carrying out the screening informed me that at HEC they were only treating people above 39 degrees or more serious cases”, he detailed.

Natália said that, upon arriving at the UPA, the boy received intravenous medication. “After the first medication, he was normal, but no one was watching. I even mentioned that Brayan had never taken intravenous medication.”

“When the medication was changed, he instantly began to agonize in my arms. Suddenly, Brayan passed out in my arms”, he recalled.

“I put him on the stretcher, I started shouting: ‘my son isn’t breathing’. The nurses kept calling each other and I started to resuscitate Brayan myself. He was already pale, with a blue mouth”, the woman detailed , who cries when remembering what happened.

Natália believes that the service took time because of the “unpreparedness and inexperience of the nursing team”. “The doctor also took a while and after about 40 minutes, we were already at HEC, the same hospital I had gone to previously. They transferred me to HEC, but they didn’t even let me stay at reception and then the doctor told me that Brayan had already arrived there without vital signs”, he reported.

“Hospital Estadual da Criança informs that it regrets what happened and that it sympathizes with the family members. The hospital unit’s social service is available for any clarifications to family members.

On this occasion, the hospital informs that it follows, for risk classification, the Humaniza SUS protocol for all patients admitted to the emergency room, in which vital signs are assessed, including temperature, symptoms, patient hemodynamics, comorbidities, general condition and level of consciousness. The HEC is a highly complex unit. Patients classified as blue and green are referred for care in less complex units, according to the state’s care network.

At all times, HEC remains available to receive the patient, should their health status change, through a transfer request.”
