She, however, won the place, because two French women finished ahead of her, in the classification zone, and the country already had a place as it was the host country. Thus, one of these passports was reallocated to the next World Cup qualifier, exactly the Brazilian one.

The podium was won by the Dutch Sharon van Rouwendaal with the gold medal, in a tight finish against the Spanish Maria de Valdes, silver, 0s1 behind, and the Portuguese Angelica André, bronze by 1s3. Ana Marcela was 4s3 behind the champions, in fifth. She said, after the race, that her glasses fogged up and didn’t realize she was in contention for a medal: she thought she was further behind in the classification.

Historic

In Paris, Ana Marcela will compete in her third Olympics. She was already a top athlete in 2012, but she didn’t get a place in London due to a rule that only allowed two representatives per country if both were in the top 10 at the World Cup, and the Bahian was 11th in the 10km at the World Championships in Shanghai.

In Rio, she had problems with supplementation during the race and finished in a frustrating 10th place. She came out on top in Tokyo, winning Brazil’s first Olympic gold in the sport, her second medal — Poliana Okimoto was bronze in 2016.

In World Cups, the taboo follows: Ana Marcela has never won the 10km race, the Olympic distance. She is five in the 25km, a race that is no longer contested in the World Championships, and two in the 5km. In the 10km, she has one silver (2013) and three bronzes (2015, 2017, 2022).
