SP has recorded 1/5 of the country’s air accidents since 2013

Country had 155 cases in 2023, the highest number in 5 years; FAB recorded 1,757 disasters in the last 11 years, with 791 deaths

The State of São Paulo has recorded almost 1/5 of Brazil’s air accidents since 2013, with 19.57% of total cases (1,757). In the last 11 years, 344 aircraft including small planes, helicopters and private jets fell in São Paulo territory.

São Paulo is followed by Mato Grosso (186), Rio Grande do Sul (166), Minas Gerais (147) and Paraná (133). The data comes from Cenipa (Aeronautical Accident Investigation and Prevention Center), an organization linked to the Brazilian Air Force.

The beginning of 2024 began with the search in São Paulo for a helicopter that had left the capital of São Paulo on December 31, 2023 and was heading to Ilhabela, on the north coast of the State. The aircraft was only found on January 12, 2024 in a forested area in Paraibuna (SP). The 4 occupants died.

The accident was included in the 2023 statistics – there were 155 accidents and 29 deaths last year.

The country had at least 5 accidents with national repercussions in January 2024, with 12 deaths. The most recent was a small plane that crashed and killed 7 people in a rural area of Itapeva, in Minas Gerais, on January 28. The aircraft left Campinas (SP) bound for Belo Horizonte (MG).

In addition, the country recorded:

The Cenipa panel shows that, from 2013 to 2023, 372 Air disasters in Brazil occurred due to engine failure in flight. The other main causes are loss of control in flight (339) or on the ground (182) and runway excursion (150), which is when an aircraft leaves the runway surface during a landing or takeoff.

The head of Cenipa, air brigadier Marcelo Moreno, states that the government has two major responsibilities in view of the number of aviation accidents: accountability for cases and the prevention of future accidents. According to him, all cases in the country are always investigated and the main objective is to prevent new occurrences.

“There are three phases in the investigation: data collection, data analysis which takes longer, depending on the complexity of the accident and issuing the report. We work with cutting-edge technology, always to provide the best for the country”, said in an interview with FabCastBrazilian Air Force podcast.
