Availability of oranges for consumers is lower Rural Globe
The average price of table oranges in January was R$78.89 per 40.8 kg box, a record for the entire historical series of the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea) at Esalq/USP, which began in October 1994. The value is also 16% higher than that of December 2023 and a significant 90% higher than that of January 2023, in real terms (discounting inflation by the December IGP-DI).
According to Cepea researchers, this scenario of high prices, seen since the beginning of the 2023/24 harvest, is mainly due to the shortage of supply. Although the current season has average production, low juice stocks at processors have increased the need to purchase raw materials, reducing the availability of oranges on the table market.
To make matters worse, the current typical off-season period for pears further restricts the available volume. On the other hand, demand is strong, as high temperatures tend to stimulate fruit consumption.
