The offensive against Shiite militias linked to Iran takes place in retaliation for the death of three US soldiers in the bombing of the Tower 22 base, in northeast Jordan, on January 28

The United States attacked, on Friday night (local time), targets linked to pro-Iran Shiite militias in Syria. The military offensive was a first retaliation for the death of three US soldiers during drone bombings of Tower 22, a military base used by the United States in northeast Jordan, on the border with Syria. Drones hit the Tower 22 accommodation on Sunday (28/1). The non-governmental organization Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH) reported that six pro-Iranian fighters were killed in the initial wave of US response.

Last Thursday, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed that the retaliation plans were approved and that the start of the attacks depended solely on weather conditions in the region. In turn, President Joe Biden had signaled that he did not want an escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. The attack on Syria came just hours after Biden received the bodies of the three soldiers at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.
