Since last Thursday (1st), fueling the vehicle and cooking have become more expensive. The Tax on the Circulation of Goods and Services (ICMS), a tax charged by states, rose for gasoline, diesel and cooking gas.

Montes Claros businessman, Hélio Augusto Martins, explains that there is nothing to do — “Unfortunately, we Brazilians cannot do anything about this. Unfortunately, as it is a government monopoly, we can’t do anything. If this were privatized in fact and not in history, we could perhaps be a little more privileged. But in Brazil, the government dictates the rules and we are at their mercy, regardless of what we think”, he laments.

The increase, approved in October by the National Council for Financial Policy (Confaz), a body that brings together state finance secretaries, reflects the decision of several states to readjust the ICMS for products in general to compensate for revenue losses. In most cases, states raised general rates from 18% to 20%. As fuels follow a different taxation system, the adjustments will be with fixed values in cents.

Driver Wanderlei Coutinho complains that the constant increase in life has become a real battle — “They say that the federal government’s taxes have gone down, the state government seems to lower its share, and then it goes back up again. I think they should come to some common sense between the federal and state governments, impose the tax and leave gasoline at a basic price. Since I was a child, I’ve heard about this fight between raising and lowering, so in the end they fight there and we’re the ones who pay the bill”, says Coutinho.

Until last Wednesday (31), the rates were R$ 1.22 per liter for gasoline, R$ 0.9456 per liter for diesel and R$ 16.27 per 13 kg cylinder for gas. kitchen. With the adjustment, the new values rose to R$1.3721 per liter for gasoline, R$1.0635 per liter for diesel and R$18.38 per 13 kg cylinder for cooking gas.

Considering the average price calculated by the National Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANP), a liter of gasoline increased to R$5.71, on average. In the case of diesel, the average value per liter rose to R$5.95 (normal diesel) and exceeded R$6 for S-10 diesel, which has a lower sulfur content.

With an increase of R$0.15, gasoline reached, on average, R$5.71, considering the average price of the product based on the ANP price survey. Diesel oil had an average increase of R$0.12, reaching an average of R$5.95, while Diesel S-10 could exceed R$6.00 per liter, on average.

In the case of cooking gas, the average price of a 13-kilo cylinder rose, on average, from R$100.98 to R$103.60.

Last Thursday (1), Petrobrás announced the reduction in the price of natural gas sold by the state-owned company to distributors by 2%, on average. According to the company, contracts with distributors provide for quarterly product price updates.

For the new quarter that began this Thursday, according to Petrobras, the references were a 3.6% drop in oil and a 1.5% depreciation of the real against the dollar.

Also according to Petrobras, distributors with contracts in force in 2023 saw a reduction of 22.2% throughout the year.

“Petrobras emphasizes that the final price of natural gas to the consumer is not only determined by the company’s selling price of the molecule, but also by the cost of transportation to the distributor, by the supply portfolio of each distributor, as well as by their margins ( and, in the case of CNG – Vehicle Natural Gas, from resale stations) and federal and state taxes”, says a note released by the company.

The reduction does not refer to the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), that is, cooking gas, which is packaged in cylinders.
