This February 2, the considerable space rock will make its closest approach to the planet in more than 100 years

An immense asteroid called by scientists “2008 OS7” — but which, due to its considerable dimensions, is nicknamed “city destroyer“—, will make its closest approach to Earth in decades this Friday, February 2nd.

The public, however, need not worry: although the space rock is an impressive 271 meters in diameter, it is predicted to pass 2.85 million kilometers away from our planet. planet.

In astronomical proportions, the asteroid’s trajectory is considered close to Earth, but it will still be seven times further away than the Moon, our planet. Natural satellite, as pointed out by Live Science.

Still, it is classified as “potentially dangerous”. If it collided with our planet, it would be capable of destroying a city the size of New York, for example. There are other known meteors, on the other hand, that are much larger: this is the case of Vredefort, which is considered a “planet destroyer”.

To put the threat into perspective, it is worth remembering that, currently, there are around 25,000 asteroids categorized as “potentially dangerous” by NASA.

How to follow

An interesting detail is that it will be possible to follow the space rock’s passage through the The Virtual Telescope Project, which will be broadcast live online this Friday, 2. Access through this link.

Another curiosity about the space event is that, according to projections from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) of NASAnone of 2008 OS7’s future routes to the year 2198 will bring it this close to the Earth as it happens today.
