The police discovered that the car was modified in a workshop in Aparecida de Goiânia (GO) in July 2023. The service was carried out by a 48-year-old man with no technical training and under the supervision and control of the 35-year-old owner of the workshop.

The part installed in the car replaced the vehicle’s catalytic converter and was “produced and assembled in a precarious manner and deviating from the manufacturer’s quality standards”, say the police. The men were charged with four counts of manslaughter, when there is no intention to kill.

Workshop denies that modification killed young people

The workshop’s defense says that the exhaust exchange was carried out by an outsourced company. However, lawyer David Soares did not provide the name of the outsourced company, nor when or where the part was manufactured or acquired.

Mechanics is, in fact, an “automotive aesthetics” store. According to the lawyer, these are services that include “a special wash, micropainting, among many others”.
