To celebrate Black History Month in the United States, this Thursday’s Google doodle (1st) pays tribute to the American writer and civil rights activist James Baldwin. He is remembered for many literary works that explore the themes of social justice and the efforts of minorities to survive, as well as topics such as race, class and sexuality.

Who is James Baldwin?

Born in August 1924, James Baldwin grew up in Harlem, New York, and helped raise his eight siblings. During his teenage years, he followed his stepfather’s influence and became a junior minister at a church, but he also became involved in his high school magazine, where he began publishing poems, short stories, and plays.

In 1944, at age 20, his promise as a potential writer earned him a scholarship. However, his first novel, Go Tell It on the Mountain, took 12 years to complete. It presents a semi-biographical narrative that is currently considered one of the best English-language novels of the 20th century.

At the age of 24, James Baldwin moved to France, a place that helped him write in a freer and more personal way. As a result of this journey, the author wrote essays such as Notes of a Native Son, Nobody Knows My NameIt is The Fire Next Time. His second novel was released in 1956 with the title Giovanni’s Roomone of the first books to portray the characterization of homosexuality in mainstream culture.

During his career, the writer published many materials and received several awards, but his influence is enormous for those who feel represented in his pages.

About the doodle

To celebrate the renowned writer, Google invited American artist Jon Key, who has been exhibiting his art since 2016 in New York and other US states. He told Google that James Baldwin’s radical and transformative writings inspired him to navigate the world as a gay black man.

“Baldwin was not afraid to speak his mind and advocate for marginalized voices. With the work I create, I try to manifest environments and community structures imbued with truth, pride, and love — principles that I think are exemplified by the writings and life of James Baldwin,” reported the artist.

The inspiration for creating the art, according to the artist, came from numerous photos and portraits of James Baldwin as he worked in his home office. Key stated that his focus was on four themes: blackness, homosexuality, family and the south of the country.
