Federal police officers arrested, in Angra dos Reis, on Rio’s Costa Verde, retired police officer Julio Cesar de Almeida, known as Julinho Nota 10. He is accused of gold smuggling. Julio Cesar had been on the run for three years, since Operation Ruta 79. According to investigations, the retired agent was responsible for making it possible for the gold to leave through the airports of Rio and Guarulhos (SP).
The investigation revealed how gold taken from illegal mining in the Amazon is smuggled out of Brazil and sold in Italian jewelry stores. The PF believes that the gang that Julio Cesar was part of smuggled a ton of gold between 2017 and 2019.
According to investigations, the group was headed by businessman Celso Faria. Julio Cesar would be one of its main operators. Celso was arrested in July 2021, when Operation Ruta 79 was launched. Other prisoners were: Newton Prando Júnior, representative of a company based in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, and Alessandra Capovilla Nicastro, partner of a food trading company jewelry.
At the time, federal agents attempted to serve an arrest warrant for Julio Cesar in two houses in the West Zone of Rio, but he was not found. The retired police officer had already been arrested in 2008, for removing a suitcase with jewelry from a plane coming from Lisbon, Portugal.
In the process, he gained the right to respond in freedom. When he was convicted, he was considered a fugitive until he was located in one of his houses in Angra. Julio Cesar is responsible for crimes of criminal organization, money laundering, smuggling, embezzlement and passive corruption, among others. He was taken to the PF Superintendence, in Praça Mauá, and from there he will go to the prison system.
Operation Ruta 79 was named after the word that means “route” in Spanish and the number that refers to the position of the chemical element gold in the periodic table.
