In total, Brazil recorded 40,464 intentional homicides (with intent to kill), femicides, robberies and bodily injuries followed by death, compared to 42,190 in 2022, which represents a reduction of 4%.

Amapá (45.5%), Rio de Janeiro (6.1%), Pernambuco (5.3%), Alagoas (2.2%) and Maranhão (1.8%) had an increase in violent deaths.

Sergipe was the state with the biggest reduction: 22.9%.

The data does not include deaths resulting from police violence – these fell 2.3%, from 6,445 to 6,296, according to the Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino. However, in the same period, this index increased in 14 states.

The biggest increases were seen in Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Roraima. In the latter state, growth was 225%, compared to the previous year.

Lowest value in the historical series

The number of murders in 2023 presented by the ministry is the lowest in 16 years, compared to the historical series of the Brazilian Public Security Forum (FBSP). See the graph below:

The Violence Monitor, a national index created by g1 in partnership with the FBSP and the USP Violence Studies Center (NEV), points out that violent deaths have been on a downward trend since 2018.

In August 2023, the Monitor had already shown that, in the first half of the year, murders had fallen by 3.4% in the country. Data for the full year has not yet been released.

In an interview with GloboNews on Tuesday (30), Dino acknowledged that the value is still high.

“Still a very high number, there is no doubt. But this number [representa] around 2 thousand lives were saved compared to 2022. We can say that the policies have produced results. These are not yet the results that society deserves, but they are results that show the way”, said the minister.
