These are stories that you won’t believe could have happened outside of fiction, but they all tell of real events.
We can’t deny it: we love films based on real events. Just seeing the warning sign makes us start paying more attention to the story. Generally, films that tell real events are so incredible that, if a screenwriter had written them, it wouldn’t be the same.
Here we have selected three films that you can find on the Telecine and Prime Video streaming platforms, and which are based on real stories. Plus, none of them last more than 2 hours, which is a godsend in this age of 180-minute films.
1 – Untouchables (2012)
Every now and then, French cinema releases a film that is internationally successful. In 2011 it happened with Untouchables, a title you certainly remember. Philippe (François Cluzet) is a man from high society who becomes quadriplegic after a paragliding accident. Now that he can’t do anything himself, he turns to an assistant for help. The person who arrives to take on the role is Driss (Omar Sy), a young man who has just been released from prison. They appear to be opposites, but a unique relationship is created between them.
If Untouchables triumphed all over the world it was because it is a captivating comedy full of good feelings, exactly what you need to see if what you are looking for is to relax and reconcile with the world a little. There was an American remake with Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart as the protagonists, but this is a separate topic.
It is available on Telecine Play.
2 – Between Women (2023)
One of the best films released this year is Between Women, directed by Sarah Polley. The director focuses on a group of women who live in an isolated religious colony and who suffer a horrible situation: they are systematically raped by local men. Tired of suffering, they decide to come together to make a decision: either they leave the community or they rebel.
The feature film is based on the novel of the same name by Miriam Toews, which, in turn, tells the story of rapes that occurred in the Colony of Manitoba, a Mennonite community that lived isolated in Bolivia. A terrible event masterfully told by Polley and her main actresses: Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley and Frances McDormand.
It is available on Prime Video.
3 – Love Sick (2017)
Another great film in this category is Love Sick, from 2017. And not because the events that the film narrates are exceptional, but because it tells the story of a love relationship so unusual that it is difficult to imagine that it could happen in this world of quick matches. .
The film tells the story of Kumail, an Uber driver and aspiring comedian. One day, after introducing himself, he meets Emily, a graduate student at the University of Chicago. They keep in touch until ghosts from the past break up the relationship. One day, he receives a call that Emily is in a medically induced coma at the hospital. She has no family nearby and he has to take care of her. This is how they regain contact in the most atypical way possible.
The film is written by the protagonists of this love story, Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani (Welcome to the Seduction Club) and, although they introduced elements that didn’t happen in real life, the essence is there.
It is available on Prime Video.
