This weekend Mr Olympia 2023 takes place, the biggest bodybuilding championship in the world. In Brazil, expectations are high, with chances of an unprecedented victory for the country. Brazilian athletes have already accumulated some trophies –Francielle Mattos is the current two-time champion in the Wellness category–, but men have not yet reached the top. Ramon Rocha Querioz, from Acre, can change this story.
The bodybuilder known as Ramon Dino is 1.81m tall and is one of the favorites to win the competition in the Classic Physique category. This subdivision of the championship was created to honor the golden era of bodybuilding, when athletes had a more proportional physique. Therefore, there is a weight limit according to height. To win, Ramon must face other strong competitors, with emphasis on Canadian Chris Bumstead, Cbum, current four-time champion.
Ramon was born in Rio Branco in 1995 and describes a childhood marked by simplicity. In podcasts and YouTube videos, he says that his parents stopped eating at times, so he and his brothers wouldn’t go hungry. Despite this, the athlete often describes his childhood moments with joy. A fan of hero films, since he was little he identified with the Hulk, as he was a muscular character.
As a teenager, Ramon started calisthenics because it is a not very expensive physical activity, in which the exercises only use body weight. Soon he began to develop muscles and attract attention. In 2017, at age 22, he competed in bodybuilding for the first time.
Without a sponsor at the beginning, Dino juggled his training routine with his freelance work. Friends and relatives also helped him. The athlete said that he did not have money to eat the amount of protein necessary to develop his muscles.
In 2020, Ramon was invited to live at Mansão Maromba, owned by influencer Toguro. There, he and other young people created content and relied on YouTube monetization. With the channel’s visibility, the athlete got his first sponsors and boosted his career.
The bodybuilder hoped to grow the muscles in his arms and legs, but he also developed his heart. During his stay at the Mansion, he met Vitória Viana, his current wife. The couple has two children: Ravi, 2 years old, and Clara, 6 months old.
The athlete is going to his third participation in Mr Olympia. In his debut in 2021, he already reached fifth place. The following year, he beat veteran competitors and reached second place – he lost, precisely, to Cbum. Sports experts pointed out that the Brazilian has a physique at the same level or even superior to that of Bumstead, with emphasis on his forearm. However, the routine of poses and choreography on stage are his weak points and kept him away from the top 1.
For this year’s edition, Ramon opted for discretion on social media and avoided posting photos of his body. Some believe that, beneath the baggy clothes, the athlete hides the physique of a champion.
