This story is so surreal, it could very well serve as a script for a remake of ‘Holiday’ by iconic horror producer Blumhouse. However, it is a terrible real plot that, unfortunately, ended in the death of one person.
It all started with the disappearance of David Rainey, who, one night in 2021, allegedly had a fight with his wife Cindy and abandoned the house in Florida where they were on vacation without taking any personal belongings or a cell phone with him.
The woman reported her companion missing on the morning of July 25, saying that the man had not returned to the rented house. On the same day, after an “extensive search of the area”, police officers found Rainey’s body in a stream at the back of the property where the Raineys were staying. The victim suffered several stab wounds to the chest and was thrown into the water after his death.
The case was immediately treated as a homicide and remained unsolved for just over two years without naming any suspects. Until now, with a surprising turn of events. Cindy and her two children, Bailey and Jack, were arrested and charged with tampering with evidence.
Although none of the three have been officially charged with Rainey’s stabbing and murder, the connection between the arrests and the case points to the revelation of the perpetrator – or perpetrators – of the crime in the very short term.
And what gives an even more dramatic touch to the whole situation is the fact that Bailey and Jack created a virtual crowdfunding to financially support the family after their father “passed away unexpectedly”. They raised US$475 (just over R$2,300) from six donors.
David, who was originally from California, took his family to Palm Coast, Florida, because of his work as a welder for the company Ethos Energy. He, his wife, children and a family friend rented the house in Suwannee, in the same state where they lived, to enjoy their vacation.
