Worker dies during construction on Rocinha hillside | Rio de Janeiro

Rio – Worker Marcos Paulo Santos Batista died after an accident during work on a hillside in the community of Rocinha, in the South Zone of Rio. On Tuesday afternoon (31), he was hit by a steel cable that was left hanging from the helicopter that helped with construction. Marcos was rescued at the Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital, in Gávea, but he succumbed to his injuries and died on Wednesday morning.

Co-workers filmed the situation. One of them managed to hold Marcos Paulo, already unconscious, and trapped him in the cable of a helicopter that carried out the rescue. Another image shows the victim being taken away by the aircraft.

The company that won the bid for the containment works on the slopes of Rocinha, Geologus Engenharia, outsourced the service to Argos Serviços Auxiliares de Construção, responsible for hiring the workers and executing the project.

According to sources heard by the DAYthe company did not comply with necessary safety standards, such as the presence of professionals responsible for inspecting the ropes and carabiners, there were no rescue professionals in case of an accident and Marcos Paulo would not have the qualifications to carry out this type of service.

When contacted, the State Housing Company of Rio de Janeiro (Cehab-Rj) lamented the death of the worker and clarified that the employee was hired by the contractor carrying out works at the site. The company informed that an internal procedure will investigate the facts and will indicate possible punishments.
